André Rieu Delivers Spectacular Performance at a Sold-Out Belgrade Arena

World-renowned Dutch violinist and conductor André Rieu captivated a packed Belgrade Arena last night with an unforgettable concert filled with music, humor, and heartfelt moments.

The evening began with a warm “Dobro veče” in Serbian, the only phrase he knows in the language, as Rieu admitted with a smile. Assisted by Serbian journalist and host Maja Nikolić, who served as his translator, Rieu shared anecdotes and reflections on life on the road. “It’s fantastic to spend this evening with music,” he said, noting that his Johann Strauss Orchestra has performed around 90 concerts worldwide since their last visit to Belgrade two years ago.

At one point, as Rieu humorously described his post-concert routine, a member of the audience shouted “Thinking of Belgrade!” when he paused to mention his thoughts before sleep. Rieu confirmed this with a laugh, delighting the crowd.

The international orchestra showcased its diversity with artists from across the globe, including tenors Gary Bennett (Tasmania), Bela Mavrak (Hungary), and Serge Bosch (Belgium), who delivered stirring renditions of famous arias such as Puccini’s Nessun Dorma. The ensemble also featured a young talent show winner from the Netherlands and sopranos from Greece and Ukraine, underscoring the group’s cultural richness.

The audience itself was a vibrant mix of attendees from Montenegro, Turkey, Poland, Germany, and beyond. A highlight of the night was a playful performance of España Cañí, during which a costumed bull humorously “charged” at a woman in red, drawing laughter and applause.

Rieu paid homage to Johann Strauss, praising his music’s ability to bring joy to countless people worldwide. Introducing Strauss’ The Blue Danube, Rieu encouraged couples in the audience to waltz along, creating a magical moment. The night concluded with the exuberant Italian hit Marina, leaving the crowd cheering after two hours of musical brilliance.

“No matter what life throws at you, believe in the power of music. It’s the greatest treasure that will always be with you, even in the toughest times,” Rieu said, capturing the evening’s uplifting spirit.

This concert reaffirmed André Rieu’s reputation as a masterful performer who transcends cultural and linguistic barriers, connecting audiences through the universal language of music.
